Anyone looking for a small business idea in Egypt finds dozens of ready-made lists: home-based businesses, low-capital businesses, profitable businesses. The trouble is that these lists do not tell you why an idea might work now, in which area, or who you would compete with. This article takes a different route. We start from the latest published data on Egypt's economy, draw demand signals from it, and suggest small business areas linked to each signal, with what you should check before spending a pound.
How to read data in search of an idea
A good small business idea usually sits where three things meet: existing or growing demand, supply that falls short or serves it poorly, and your ability to close that gap. Public data helps with the first two:
- Demand signals: population and age structure, student numbers, tourist numbers, and the income reaching households through remittances. These figures tell you who needs what.
- Supply signals and gaps: the number of establishments in each activity, the new companies founded each month, and what Egypt imports. An activity crowded with establishments means stiff competition; goods imported in large quantities may point to an opportunity for a local alternative.
Keep two things in mind before reading the figures. First, much of this data is published through newspapers quoting the official bodies rather than on those bodies' own websites, and we have marked that in the source list. Second, national figures describe all of Egypt, while your business serves a neighbourhood, a city or a specific group, so you need to move from the national figure to a local test.
Egypt's market in numbers
| Indicator | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic population | 109.5 million | September 20261 |
| Share of population under 15 | 30.6% | Start of 20262 |
| Economic establishments | About 3.9 million | Economic census 2022/20233 |
| Wholesale and retail share of establishments | 54.4% | Economic census 2022/20233 |
| New companies in one month | 4,288 | May 20264 |
| Pre-university students | 28.9 million | 2024/20255 |
| Tourist arrivals | 19 million | 20256 |
| Remittances from Egyptians abroad | USD 47.3 billion | FY2025/20267 |
| Imports | USD 103.75 billion | 20258 |
| Housing units completed | About 212,000 | 2024/20259 |
| Offshoring services exports | USD 5.2 billion | 202510 |
These figures do not make an idea on their own, but they tell you where to look. In the sections below we take each signal and ask: which small businesses connect to it, and what should you check before you start?
1. Education, skills and children's activities
The signal: pre-university enrolment reached about 28.9 million students in the 2024/2025 school year, up from 28.5 million the year before5. People under 15 make up about 30.6% of the population2. In other words, around a third of the population are children under fifteen, a group that needs education, activities and care for years.
Examples of small businesses: an after-school centre combining homework and activities, skills courses such as coding for children, languages or calligraphy, a licensed home nursery, and small online group classes in a specific subject.
What to check: the licences required for an activity involving children, the number of nearby centres and their prices, and seasonality, since demand for courses rises in the holidays and changes around exams. Most importantly: will families in your area pay a price that covers the rent and the trainers' pay?
2. Finishing, maintenance and home services
The signal: according to CAPMAS data, about 212,000 housing units were completed in FY2024/2025 with investment of EGP 245.3 billion, compared with about 158,900 units the year before9. Every new unit needs finishing, a kitchen, doors, windows and fittings, then years of maintenance. In GAFI's May 2026 report, construction ranked third by number of new companies, with 436, and first by capital4.
Examples of small businesses: finishing contracting specialised in one type of work, a kitchen or aluminium workshop, a home maintenance service with clear appointments and prices, and supply and installation of lighting or flooring for specific residential projects.
What to check: where new units are concentrated near you, who serves them now, and payment terms in contracts. Finishing work usually needs working capital to buy materials before the customer pays, as we explain in our guide to break-even and working capital. A reputation for quality work and meeting deadlines is the strongest competitive advantage in this field.
3. Small tourism services
The signal: the Prime Minister announced that Egypt received a record 19 million tourists in 2025, with a target of 30 million a year by 20286. In 2026, the Minister of Tourism said arrivals reached about 12.8 million between January and 4 September11.
Examples of small businesses: specialist tours focused on food, history or crafts in a particular city, craft products and gifts designed differently from what is on offer, transport and guiding services in tourist areas, and day experiences such as Egyptian cooking or handicraft classes.
What to check: many tourism activities need a licence from the competent authorities, so confirm that before taking any step. Bear in mind that tourism is concentrated in particular cities and seasons, and that the business may depend on global booking platforms and their commissions. Tourism is also sensitive to regional events, so the study should test a scenario with lower arrivals.
4. Local alternatives to imported goods
The signal: Egypt's imports exceeded USD 103.75 billion in 2025, compared with about USD 95.33 billion in 20248. According to CAPMAS data as reported in the press, imports of non-durable consumer goods were about USD 16.6 billion, and the items mentioned include refined oils at about USD 1.67 billion and meat at about USD 1.47 billion12.
Examples of small businesses: small-scale manufacturing of consumer products currently imported, such as personal care products, detergents or packaging supplies; packing and packaging local food products to a quality that competes with imports; and making simple parts or supplies for existing workshops and factories.
What to check: a large import figure does not mean a local alternative is possible or profitable. Ask: are the raw materials themselves imported? What minimum production volume makes the cost competitive? Are there licences or standards for the product? This field usually needs more capital than services, plus equipment, and a careful break-even analysis because fixed costs are higher.
There is a cheaper way to start: manufacturing accounts for 13.4% of establishments in Egypt3, so there is a wide base of small workshops and factories. At first you can contract one of them to manufacture for you in small quantities while you focus on design, marketing and sales, then buy equipment once demand is proven.
5. Digital services and outsourcing
The signal: the Information Technology Industry Development Agency announced that offshoring services exports reached USD 5.2 billion in 202510. In May 2026 alone, 294 new companies were founded in communications and information technology4.
Examples of small businesses: a small agency specialising in one service for clients abroad, such as content design, data entry or Arabic customer service; digital marketing for local small businesses; and building online stores and booking systems for a particular sector.
What to check: capital needs are relatively small, but capacity is limited by your team's hours, so calculate break-even in monthly hours or projects rather than units. Watch customer concentration: one large client can mean good income and high risk at the same time.
6. Services for new businesses
The signal: 4,288 new companies were founded in May 2026, compared with 4,021 in May 2025, led by services with 2,814 companies4, about 66% of the total. Every new company needs an accountant, a visual identity, a website, invoicing systems and workspace.
Examples of small businesses: an accounting and bookkeeping office for small companies on a monthly subscription, visual identity design in clearly priced packages, setting up electronic invoicing and accounting systems, and co-working spaces in areas that lack them.
What to check: do you have the experience or professional licence the service requires? How will you reach new company owners in their first months? The advantage of this field is that income can be monthly and recurring, which makes cash flow more stable.
7. Services for Egyptians abroad and their families
The signal: remittances from Egyptians working abroad reached a record USD 47.3 billion in FY2025/2026, up 29.6% on the previous year, according to the Central Bank's statement as reported by news agencies7. That is income reaching households in Egypt, and it also means a large group of potential customers who live outside Egypt and need someone to get things done for them inside it.
Examples of small businesses: managing and letting flats owned by Egyptians abroad, supervising finishing work on their behalf with photo reports, administrative errands and paperwork, and home care services for elderly relatives in Egypt.
What to check: trust is everything here, because the customer cannot see you. Think about how to build it: clear contracts, regular reports and transparent handling of money. Check the legal requirements for activities that involve managing other people's money or property.
8. Restaurants and drinks
The signal: food and accommodation services, including restaurants, hotels and cafés, account for about 4.8% of establishments according to the economic census3.
Examples of small businesses: a drinks kiosk or cart in a high-traffic location, a cloud kitchen selling only through delivery apps, and a specialist food product sold wholesale to cafés and shops.
What to check: this field is easy to enter and hard to sustain. Location, rent and delivery-app commissions decide profit, not food quality alone. Calculate your daily break-even precisely; we walk through a full coffee kiosk example in our feasibility study guide for Egypt 2026.
9. Trade: the largest and most crowded market
The signal: the sixth economic census counted about 3.9 million establishments employing about 15.2 million workers, with wholesale and retail trade accounting for 54.4% of establishments, followed by manufacturing at 13.4%3.
What it means: trade is the most common activity because it is the easiest to start, which also makes it the most competitive. Opening a grocery or clothes shop in an area with dozens of similar shops adds no value for the customer. Opportunity in trade usually comes from specialisation: a product category that is hard to find in your area, better service, or a sales channel competitors do not use, such as WhatsApp ordering with fast delivery in a limited area.
A quick comparison of the fields
| Field | Demand signal | Starting capital | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Education and children's activities | 28.9 million students | Low to medium | Licensing and seasonality |
| Finishing and maintenance | 212,000 housing units | Medium | Working capital and payment terms |
| Tourism services | 19 million tourists | Low to medium | Licensing and regional events |
| Import alternatives | USD 103.75 billion imports | High | Production volume and imported inputs |
| Digital services | USD 5.2 billion offshoring | Low | Capacity and client concentration |
| Services for new companies | 4,288 companies a month | Low | Expertise and reaching clients |
| Services for Egyptians abroad | USD 47.3 billion remittances | Low | Building trust remotely |
| Restaurants and drinks | 4.8% of establishments | Medium | Location, rent and commissions |
| Specialist trade | 54.4% of establishments | Medium | Intense competition |
The capital column is descriptive, for comparing fields, not a set of figures, because the actual capital depends on the size, location and set-up of the business. The only way to know it precisely is a feasibility study built on real prices.
Example: from signal to idea, step by step
Let us take the housing signal and follow it until it becomes an idea you can test. The figures in this example are illustrative; the point is the way of thinking.
- The national signal: about 212,000 housing units completed in one year9. Every unit needs regular maintenance once people move in.
- Moving to the local level: pick a new city or a district near you. Count the compounds handed over recently, search Google Maps and residents' Facebook groups for maintenance providers, and read residents' complaints. Suppose you find recurring complaints about missed appointments and unclear prices.
- Shaping the offer: a home maintenance service with fixed appointments, prices published in advance for each type of job, and a guarantee on the work. The advantage is not the service itself but solving the complaint you found.
- A first calculation: if the average visit costs EGP 400 and the variable cost of materials and travel is EGP 120, the contribution margin is EGP 280. With monthly fixed costs of EGP 25,000, break-even is about 90 visits a month, roughly 3 to 4 visits per working day. Can one or two technicians manage that? Are there that many requests in the area?
- The test: advertise the service in residents' groups, offer a regular maintenance package with a deposit, carry out the first twenty visits yourself or with one technician, and record the actual cost, the time and the share who book again.
After these steps the idea is no longer "a maintenance business" in general, but a specific offer for a specific group, with figures you have tried yourself. That is the difference between an idea from a ready-made list and an idea ready for a feasibility study.
Mind the age of the data
Published figures always lag reality. The economic census covers 2022/2023 even though it was published in 2025, GAFI's monthly reports appear after the month ends, and tourism and remittance figures move with regional conditions and the exchange rate. So use national figures to identify direction, not to calculate sales. When you write your feasibility study, state the date and source of each figure, check whether a newer one has been published, and base your sales forecast on what you find in your area and in your tests.
How to choose your idea among these fields
Once you have seen the map, choose a field by asking three questions in order:
- What do you know? A field where you have experience, contacts or a skill reduces risk considerably. Someone experienced in finishing work is closer to success in finishing contracting than someone with a restaurant idea who has never worked in one.
- What suits your capital? If your capital is limited, start with fields that need less capital and lower fixed costs, such as services, then expand later.
- Does demand show up in your area? The national figure is a starting point. Go down to your area: count competitors, talk to potential customers, and test demand cheaply as we explain in our guide to testing a business idea.
Common mistakes when choosing an idea from data
- Confusing market size with your share of it: 19 million tourists does not mean your business will serve a share of them. What matters is how many customers you can actually reach from your location.
- Treating crowding as reason enough to reject an idea: many competitors means demand exists. The question is whether you have something that sets you apart.
- Overlooking licences: education, tourism and food activities need special licences that can take time and add cost. Build them into the study from the start.
- Building on a single number: an idea that depends on one indicator, such as tourism growth in one year, is weaker than one supported by several signals.
From idea to study
Once you choose a field and an idea, start with Kleverz's free idea check to organise your assumptions and identify the riskiest, then test demand cheaply, then order the detailed study, which calculates on your own figures the investment costs, sales forecast, three-year monthly cash flow, break-even and capital required, and tests optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. The figures in this article can form part of the market section of your study, provided you add what you found in your area.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best small business in Egypt in 2026?
There is no single best business for everyone. The best one for you combines clear demand in your area, a skill or experience you have, and capital that suits your means. The data in this article helps you identify the fields worth researching; local testing and a feasibility study come next.
Which businesses need little capital?
Service businesses, usually: digital services, accounting for small companies, services for Egyptians abroad, and training courses in venues rented by the hour, because they need no heavy equipment or stock. But their capacity is limited by your time and your team's.
Does having many competitors mean the idea is bad?
No. Many competitors indicate demand, but you need a clear advantage: a lower price backed by lower cost, higher quality, specialisation, or a different sales channel. A complete absence of competitors needs explaining before you treat it as an opportunity.
Where can I find market data for my area?
CAPMAS publishes census data and sector bulletins, and GAFI publishes monthly reports on new companies. At the local level, there is no substitute for counting competitors on the ground, talking to customers and checking Google Maps.
Are these figures enough for a feasibility study?
They are part of the market analysis section, but not enough on their own. A feasibility study needs figures specific to your business: prices, costs, expected sales volume at your location, and the capital required until you reach break-even.
